Do I Really Need Website Maintenance? What a Care Plan Actually Buys

By Launchers Web

Fair question. You paid for the site, it works — why keep paying? Here's the honest breakdown, including when the answer is "you don't."

What actually happens to an unmaintained website

Websites don't stay finished. Certificates expire and browsers start showing "Not Secure" warnings. Hosting renewals fail on an old credit card and the site silently disappears. Software behind the site collects security holes. The phone number changes but the site still shows the old one — for two years. None of this announces itself; you find out when a customer mentions it, and by then you've been losing calls for months.

The expensive part isn't the fix. It's the not knowing. A site that's been down for six days costs more in missed jobs than a year of any care plan.

What a care plan actually covers

Ours is $49/month — first month included with every build — and it buys four specific things:

Hosting and SSL included. No separate bills, no renewal surprises, no "Not Secure" warnings.

Someone is watching. Your site is checked around the clock. If it goes down at 2am, we know before your customers tell you.

Nightly backups. If anything ever breaks badly, yesterday's version of everything exists. This is the difference between an incident and a catastrophe.

Monthly edits. New photos, a price change, a new service, a holiday notice — sent by text, handled. This is the one owners end up using most, because a site that stays current keeps selling.

When you don't need one

Honesty over upsell: if your site is a one-page brochure, your cousin handles IT, and you'd genuinely notice within a day if it went down — you can skip the plan and pay for fixes when they happen. Some owners prefer that, and it's a reasonable bet. Just make sure someone owns the hosting bill and the backups, because "nobody" is the default and it's the expensive option.

The one-question test

If your website went down on a Friday night, when would you find out — and who would fix it? If you have a good answer, you're covered. If the answer is a shrug, that shrug is what the monthly fee replaces.

Every site we build includes the first month of care so you can feel the difference before deciding. See what's included, or start your build — first draft in 3–5 days.
